From 6th April 2025, working parents in the UK will have access to Neonatal Care Leave (SNCL) — a new entitlement offering up to 12 weeks of paid leave for those whose babies need neonatal care. This important new right is designed to support families during a challenging time.
What is Neonatal Care Leave?
SNCL gives eligible employees additional paid leave when their baby requires care in a neonatal unit after birth.
- Tier One: Covers the period while the baby is receiving neonatal care and the following seven days. This leave can be taken intermittently if needed.
- Tier Two: Covers any remaining SNCL entitlement, which must be taken as a continuous block within 68 weeks of the baby’s birth. Notice requirements are 15 days for one week’s leave and 28 days for two or more weeks.
How Does SNCL Fit with Existing Leave?
SNCL is designed to add to, not replace, existing family leave entitlements.
- Maternity Leave: Employees must finish their maternity leave before taking SNCL, which can be used any time within the 68-week window.
- Paternity Leave: SNCL can follow immediately after paternity leave or be taken later.
- Shared Parental Leave: SNCL can be combined with shared parental leave or taken afterward.
Key Points for Employers
- SNCL provides up to 12 weeks of paid leave — an essential addition to family leave rights.
- Notice periods vary: 15 days for one week, 28 days for two or more weeks.
- Clear communication with employees is crucial to ensure they understand their rights.
