Inequality in the workplace – would you recognise it and know how to prevent it?

You would be forgiven for thinking that, with the introduction of the Equality Act 2010 ten years ago that equality in the workplace would have significantly improved.

Yet, over 8.2 million employees in the UK feel they’ve been discriminated against on the grounds of their gender.

That’s according to a new survey which polled 2,000 employees in the UK on the topic (SMELoans). Over 1 in 2 women and nearly 7 out of 10 LGBT workers reported being sexually harassed in the workplace (TUC Report). 70% of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) workers have been racially harassed at work in the last five years (Racism At Work survey).

So what can we do to improve equality in our workplaces?

The only way we will create equality, diversity and inclusive workplaces is by educating ourselves and our team.

The question is…

  • How well do you understand the Act and your obligations?

  • Do you know what Protected Characteristics are?

  • Are you aware of the four main areas of discrimination you need to protect against?

  • Are you aware of the ongoing gender, sexual and racial inequality that still exists in the workplace?

What can you do in the battle to
achieve equality in the workplace?
