Our Tina Munro recently attended a Maggie’s webinar on Cancer in the Workplace. In this blog, Tina outlines the key take-aways from the webinar and the importance of offering the right support.

“Attending the Maggie’s webinar really made me reflect on how we, as employers and colleagues, can better support those affected by cancer – whether they’re battling it themselves or caring for a loved one.

By 2030, over 1.1 million people with cancer will be in the UK workforce. This means HR teams need to be proactive in ensuring workplaces are flexible, supportive, and inclusive for those going through treatment and recovery.

HR’s Role in Cancer Support at Work

Cancer affects people differently, and symptoms like fatigue, pain, and anxiety may not always be visible. Open and compassionate conversations between HR, managers, and employees are crucial. Here’s where HR can help:

1. Flexible Working and Adjustments

Under the Equality Act 2010, employees with cancer are entitled to reasonable adjustments. But beyond legal compliance, flexibility helps them manage treatment and recovery. This might include:

• Flexible hours or remote working to accommodate treatment.

• Reduced workload to manage energy levels.

• Gradual return-to-work plans post-treatment.

2. Supporting Carers in the Workplace

It’s not just those diagnosed with cancer who need support – carers also face emotional and physical challenges. HR should consider:

• Flexible leave to allow carers to attend appointments.

• Wellbeing support to help them cope with stress.

3. Cancer is a Journey, Not a One-Time Event

Support shouldn’t stop at diagnosis or treatment – it needs to continue throughout recovery and beyond. Employees may face ongoing health challenges, and HR can make a big difference by ensuring long-term, tailored support.

The Power of Communication

At the heart of this is good communication. Every cancer experience is different, so assumptions don’t help. Instead, HR should foster a culture where employees feel safe to share their needs without fear of judgment.

With the right approach, workplaces can become a source of stability and purpose for employees facing cancer. HR plays a key role in making that happen.

Does your workplace have strong cancer support policies? If not, now is the time to start the conversation.”
