About Gravitate HR
Founded in 2006 we are a dynamic and experienced team offering an agile, flexible service for SMEs through to large blue chip companies.
We work throughout the UK. We have teams based in Edinburgh and Glasgow who work with companies all over the UK. Like many other businesses we have harnessed the benefits of remote working offering greater options to our clients via Zoom and Teams. This has enabled us to expand our reach and offering as a business.
The gap market as we saw it was having an HR team large enough and with the required experience to manage extensive and ongoing HR projects, while also being accessible to small and medium sized businesses who required ongoing or project support.
We are a responsive and knowledgeable team, big enough to manage large scale projects, small enough to offer a personal service. Our experience enables us to understand and empathise with employers and employees. Coupled with our knowledge and understanding of best practice and employment laws, we can ensure you act within the law and meet your responsibilities as an employer.

Margery McBain
Position/ Job title: Managing Director
Summary description of your role at Gravitate.
I founded the company in 2006 and I still have a very hands-on operational role. I take a lead on the development of our HR professional practice and business development to ensure that we are ahead of the curve in terms of the topical issues and a practical response to those issues and challenges. I actively manage clients and case load and particularly enjoy the tricky and less straight forward pieces of work that often result in detailed or alternative approaches to managing to a conclusion. We are a small tight knit team and I provide leadership and management of the team, to ensure that we are delivering to the best of our ability.
What aspect of HR and your job are you particularly passionate about?
Doing a great job and treating people with the respect and equality that they deserve. It is not just about what we do, which can be driven by policy and procedure, but it is also about how we deliver, the approaches that we take, the relationships that we build and the integrity that we demonstrate.
Neil Ferguson
Position/ Job title: Head of Client Services
Summary description of your role at Gravitate.
As Head of Client Services, I have a wide range of responsibilities within Gravitate HR. I lead Gravitate’s operations in the West of Scotland, supporting my own portfolio of retained clients and taking on projects and consultancy work. Business development is also an important aspect of my role, ensuring that there is always activity within our sales pipeline and winning new pieces of work. I am responsible for the line management of some staff and in a developmental capacity for the wider team. Lastly, I am a Board member of Gravitate and so help to craft and drive the company’s strategy year to year to achieve our business objectives and uphold our company values.
What aspect of HR and your job are you particularly passionate about?
With regards to HR specifically, I enjoy supporting clients with employee relations issues and helping achieve a positive result for all parties. Being able to guide and advise on a process from an objective point of view and work through the various stages to conclusion is extremely satisfying.
In terms of my role specifically, as well as getting to work with a wide variety of businesses and build relationships with our clients; I enjoy working with a close-knit team who trust and rely upon each other for support and sharing ideas. This really helps improve our client service and the quality of our work as everyone from Managing Director to HR Assistant has valuable insight to share and is encouraged to do so.
Greg Anderson
Position/ Job title: HR Account Manager
Summary description of your role at Gravitate.
As one of the Account Managers at Gravitate, I work with a number of clients supporting them with their day-to-day HR needs. Additionally, I work with senior operational staff to establish and roll out people strategies and organisational processes. I frequently collaborate with managers in the businesses we support to ensure the smooth running of the people side of the organisation. I am also responsible for the line management of our HR Assistants and HR Advisors at Gravitate, looking after their career development in HR.
What aspect of HR and your job are you particularly passionate about?
I am passionate about employee relations and have a strong interest in employment law.
Cameron McIver
Position/ Job title: HR Account Manager
Summary description of your role at Gravitate.
There are a few different elements to my role and they all lead back to the principle of making sure that clients are provided with a good service at all times. There is obviously client delivery itself which involves building good relationships with owners/senior managers as well as the wider team and providing them with a high-quality HR service that meets their needs. The needs of my clients (and indeed all of our clients) are so varied and can range from preparing and updating documentation such as contracts and policies; giving advice and guidance on employment legislation; and employee relations advice on how to resolve issues formally and informally. In addition to that, there is the business management side to the role which involve managing accounts (preparing and sending invoices; being visible to clients and making sure that their HR support time is being used to maximum effect) as well as the business development/sales aspect such as building a good network of contacts and attracting new clients to the business. I also have line management responsibilities and it’s so important to me that my colleagues are happy, feeling supported, developing as people and professionals, and feel able to challenge me when necessary!
What aspect of HR and your job are you particularly passionate about?
My favourite area can change from time to time but at the time of writing it’s probably employee relations, especially when trying to find informal resolutions. I’m not fazed at all by following formal processes but I’m a firm believer in trying to find informal resolutions to problems before referring to formal policies or procedures (when it’s appropriate to do so of course). In terms of the job itself, I love collaborating with others (clients and colleagues) in order to solve problems. Avoiding one-size-fits-all approaches might sound like a cliché but every problem and solution is different from the last and I like helping clients to navigate problem areas and end up in a place that is good for the organisation.
Laura Wiegratz

Position/ Job title: Senior HR Manager
Summary description of your role at Gravitate.
As part of the HR Account Management team, I work alongside a portfolio of clients to deliver HR support which is tailored to the needs of the business. My role involves building and maintaining strong relationships with our clients, to understand their business, people and HR needs. I often act as a soundboard for my clients and wear many hats, from an HR Manager and Business Partner to Adviser and Administrator, depending on their HR needs. In terms of HR Support, I provide both strategic and operational HR support, from change management programmes, employee relations, TUPE transfers, to recruitment projects, designing and delivering training programmes and providing general day to day documentation and advice. I have an oversight of all of our clients, the Gravitate team and their wellbeing and the work that we are delivering to ensure that we have the capacity and expertise to continuously deliver an expert service. As a senior member of the team, I sit on the Board to inform and support the strategy of the Organisation.
What aspect of HR and your job are you particularly passionate about?
Although I would describe myself as an HR Generalist, I have a particular interest in Change Management, particularly in creating organisations that are agile and fit for purpose.
