Tell us about yourself, how did you get into HR and what brought you to Gravitate?
My first HR role was with BP in Aberdeen where I was primarily involved in recruitment – I loved the buzz of the department and the work we did. Since then, my HR career has taken me through various roles in several multinational companies across Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Malaysia, where I resided for eight years. Primarily working in generalist positions, I also spent three years as an EL Consultant with RBS Mentor. I obtained my MCIPD in 1998 and followed it with a Post Graduate Diploma in Employment Law in 2000. Before joining Gravitate HR, I served as a standalone HR Manager, giving me first-hand understanding of the specific needs of smaller companies and the value this business brings to them.
What is your role?
In my capacity as an HR Consultant, I specialise in offering comprehensive HR guidance and support to a diverse portfolio of clients throughout the employment life cycle. This encompasses meticulous review and refinement of contracts, policies, and ancillary services to ensure all my support is suited to the needs of the organisation. Crucially, this requires me to stay up to date and reflective of any changes to employment legislation.
What projects are you and your team working on at the moment?
2024 will see some major changes to employment law in UK, including the right to request flexible working patterns, and many businesses are underprepared. I am focused on ensuring that our clients are aware of recent and forthcoming changes to employment legislation, updating policies and employee handbooks to reflect these changes and discussing any challenges they may bring. Employment law can be quite the minefield, so much of my day-to-day is ensuring that our clients are prepared for future changes, while allowing them to focus on their services without concern of what’s around the corner.
What is the best thing about your job?
Given my legal background, I would say that navigating the complexities of employment legislation keeps me most engaged; every day presents unique challenges. Working with individuals adds layers of nuance to each situation, making problem-solving stimulating. Leveraging my 25+ years of experience, I get a lot of fulfilment from guiding clients towards optimal solutions to their different challenges. As most outsourced HR professionals will tell you, it’s the variety that keeps it exciting.
With HR support, what are the main opportunities for businesses right now?
In today’s competitive recruitment market, it’s imperative for businesses to align their workplace practices and culture with the preferences of their desired talent pool. Key factors like job satisfaction, flexible working arrangements, inclusivity, leadership quality, and communication significantly influence employee engagement. Regular feedback mechanisms, such as staff surveys, offer valuable insights for refining policies and procedures. Engaging an outsourced HR consultant provides an objective assessment and strategic recommendations for maximum impact.
What do you do outside of work?
I enjoy running, yoga, walking my dog, and sailing (when the Scottish weather permits). I also love travelling (to escape the Scottish weather) and meeting up with friends.
